Our approach to sustainable agriculture is based on the wisdom of Ilima, an age-old traditional practice of Nguni people of Southern Africa. The word “ilima” is derived from “ukulima,” from isiXhosa language, which means, “to cultivate the land.” During “ilima” villagers combined their labour, resources, knowledge and wisdom to cultivate, collectively, village farmland to protect families against food insecurity.

The underlying principle of Ilima is 'collaboration for a mutual benefit.'

Through the Ilima approach, Indwe Trust seeks to deliver complementary rural development projects which together will help create rural wealth and shield local communities from devasting climate change effects. Each project is planned and implemented collaboratively with partners to foster exchange of ideas and sharing of resources, knowledge and wisdom.
